  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Viewer -- No publisher listed and the typeset is poorly done. Find a different publisher. : I am looking forward to reading this story but took off two stars because of the book format. This isn’t a usual book print- it’s like one of those “cheap” self published books, the paper and the text layout. My eyes hurt from having to scan back and forth a longer distance than usual lines of text in most books I’ve read. I suggest you find a different publisher of this story and don’t buy this version. An adjustment (increase) to the line spacing after each paragraph is also called for here. Actually looking at the book right now, there is no publisher listed in the front or back pages of the book and the isbn listing on the back and the text in the page in the back of the book shows this is a self published version of this story. I recommend going with a traditional publisher who knows how to typeset. Check out the weird copyright page (see photo). ( Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from MichelleB -- Gibberish translation : I purchased what was shown as a Kindle version of the Penguin Classic translation of the book. The first half is beautifully translated, but at about the 50% mark it becomes unreadable. As though the text was dumped into an electronic dictionary and spit back out verbatim. Forget grammar, the words don't even make sense. I don't know what happened, but it's disappointing. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2021 )

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from John McAlexander III -- Satisfactory version, in my opinion, except for the specific translation used ... : A much enjoyed classic of Jules Verne. Though, I have found Butcher translations of Verne not the best version of translations. Butcher , in my opinion, does not ‘hold true’ to basic commonly used verbiage. He uses MANY words when he could have and should have used fewer. (In other words, he is long winded). Again, this is just my opinion on That topic. On the whole, a very very good book . • from apoem -- TOP 1000 REVIEWERVINE VOICE : Excellent - Lovely Story. ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Cliente de Kindle -- Mathematically Wonderful : Not only does this book give us a vivid look at travel in 1870, it is character-driven. I'm so often disappointed by modern novels whose authors seem to have forgotten that you need more than a clever structure to keep a story moving along. In this book, I also love that a French author made his protagonist English, and while quirky, he has integrity and depth. A fabulous and fun adventure. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Very Interesting Story : I found this book very interesting for me. It was sort of books where you could travel virtually around the world with the author's heroes and find a lot of interesting stories related to them and the same time introduce you the culture of the countries where they were travel. I have seen the cartoon of this story more than thirty years ago but comparing to the book that I had just finished, I found a lot differences between them. So the book was very interesting than the cartoon that I've seen. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Vincent Jeffries -- A Fast-Paced Classic : This was a fun, quick read I’d recommend to anyone that enjoys fiction of any type. Yes, there are some unfortunate words, references and depictions of native Indian and North American peoples, but I think the benefits of experiencing this classic, nearly 150 year-old story outweigh the burdens of its (by modern standards) insensitivities. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Susan Catchpole -- Appalling translation! Gave up after a page! : I don’t know what has gone wrong with this Kindle edition, but it reads as if someone has just typed it into Google translate! On the 1st page, we get: “Certainly an Englishman, it have emerge as greater dubious whether or no longer or no longer or now not Phileas Fogg come to be a Londoner.” There are no typos here, that is how it is in the book. And that is just one of a dozen equally crazy sentences on page 1. Don’t bother buying it. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 30, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from James Tivendale -- "Truly, would you not for less than that make a tour around the world?" : This is the second Verne book I have devoured in two days which have both been accredited five stars. I could end the review at that and I would be content! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 31, 2016 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Hereward the Wakeful -- OWC Around the World in 80 Days : ...until now. William Butcher, who offers this new translation of ‘Around the World in 80 Days’, with an introduction and explanatory notes, as far as I can tell has veered off on a tangent of his own. Now I admit it’s difficult for me to confidently contradict him when he points to Verne’s sexual innuendo in several places throughout the story because when he picks it out Butcher does not give the original French in the notes. Again, admittedly, there are some instances which support what he says if one chooses to interpret the English translation in that way. But that’s a very old school boy joke reused more than once by Monty Python. One could do it with anything if told with the apposite physical expressions and tone of voice! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from M. Dowden -- Phileas Fogg : Jules Verne gave us here Phileas Fogg, a totally fictional character but one that still remains more famous than any of the real life people who actually have done the trip that Mr Fogg undertakes. An Englishman who is wealthy and very much keeps to himself, no one knows what his wealth is derived from, or much about him. Tight lipped and with no real friends Phileas is a member of the Reform Club and keeps to an exact timetable, day in day out. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 2, 2017 )
